  1. t Hi. Glad that I am not the only one suffering from ache and pain, numbness of my fingers and wrists. I think it is due to holding the throttle bar really tight due to nervousness especially on dual carriage ways. I am trying to relax the grip at every opportunity, for example, at traffic light while waiting for the green. With time, it will improve. My riding gloves are a little bit tight and that will not help either.
  2. Thank you guys for all the excellence advice. I hate wind and felt very unsafe. I have to slow down to 30 miles an hour to cope with the wind and I could be holding up the traffic. The stretch of A57 (Sheffield Parkway ) where I have to travel is a dual carriage way but the speed is limited to 50 miles an hour. Even for a normal day, I felt unsafe on any dual carrige way. With practice, I found it a bit easier to handle the bike now and I have to accept that wind is part of the fun of riding a bike for us
  3. 125 does not have enough power to overtake really!
  4. Thank you mate. Yes indeed. These riders are enjoying their training, very relax and really cool. My parents and the rest of the family live in Florida, USA. My younger brother and his family live in San Jose, California. Their roads are very wide and plenty of space. Sun is shining as well. Good to ride motorbikes. I always fancy riding a big heavy cruiser. As I said, I am physically not strong enough to handle these monsters. The nearest cruiser I just got today is "South Korean Made Daleim" ( which is the KIA Motor Group ) Daystar 125 cc ( 18hp ) which weigh 154 Kg dry weight. My Japanese made "Suzuki 125cc Vanvan" and "Yamaha Ybr Custom" are in 120Kg light weight group. Fortunately the hospital I work has three very large car parks. Every evening when I finish work, I go and practise in the car park. No traffic cones but I go in between cars as if I am in the street. Risk of scratching somebody's car is there but it gives me confidence on the street. One of the car park is in a slope and it is like a motorcycle riding school track, where I can practice the turning with speed, including practising emergency stop in a bend or curve up slope or down slope. Every journey I made with my bike, my priority is to ride in a very smooth fashion and I am not interested in breaking the speed limit. I need a clean car driving licence for my work. If I forget to switch off the indicator light after turning, I said to myself that I failed this particular trip. Try to improve and wanting to learn new skills. Bike riding is my hobby which is similar to learning to get a private aircraft licence, acquiring new skills and thrills but safety is paramount as house mortgage and other expenses such as car and 3 of my bikes, monthly instalments have to be paid and I can not take sick leaves or out of work due to Bike Accident! My colleagues will hate me for this.
  5. "> This video clip also gives me a tramendous amount of motivation to acquire a new skill and joyful to watch them again and
  6. "> This video clip gives me an incentive to practise a heavy bike. Hope that in due course, I could handle the heavy bike like them!!!! In my opinion, it is essential that the rider must be able to do all these slow turns smoothly at a walking speed so that the rider can pay 100% full attention to traffic and no distraction from the difficulty to ride a heavy bike itself, including emergency stop during the round about at minimum speed at 30 mph or even at faster speed!!!. Bike School for DSA will train us. Can't wait of learning these new skills from the instructors.
  7. I second this. With a 27 inch in seam, the grand hight of 5'3", 76kg (and falling at last!) and little upper body strength I pretty much never sit on the bike and paddle it along with my feet. If I'm on the bike it moves due to its own power. If I need to move it without using the engine, I get off it and walk with it. With bigger/heavier bikes it is a bit easier to lean them slight towards me, so my hip is against it to reduced the chance of it falling away from me. My current bike weighs 105kg and with a seat hight of 29.7" I can just about get both balls of my feet on the ground. When I stop at junctions/traffic lights/etc I generally only have one foot on the ground and the other either on the back brake or under the gear leaver ready to move it into second when I move off. The camber and condition of the road determines which foot I put on the ground. With more practice I am confident I'll be able to go any bike that I can comfortable hold steady with one foot (even if it is just the ball of my foot) on the ground. As for the emergency stop thing. While doing my CBT the instructor suggested I try moving the bike after I had came to a stop and done the checked using only one foot. So I tried it, slided towards the left hand side of the seat so more of my left foot was on the ground and simply pushed. It worked with no issues. Being able to get both feet fully on the ground is not a requirement, but it is very useful at building confidence. The low seat hight of the cruisers might make them appealing, but I find them difficult to move as they require lots more upper body strength. The more upright bikes, once you get them going I find are more manageable. Practise feathering the clutch and dragging the rear brake to control the bike during slow speed stuff. To put it into perspective, I can ride my bike without wobbling slower than I walk at a normal walking pace. All it takes is practice and a little bit of confidence. Many thanks. When I did my CBT, I expressed my concern about this "Rider Height & Weight Ratio" and my past experience with a heavy bike. The instructor gave me a lighter bike which I was comfortable with and that is the end of it. Since then, I bought a brand new Suzuki 125 cc Van Van which is around 120 Kg from SMC. I enjoyed so much that I have ordered another 125 cc Yamaha Ybr Custom from SMC. Another South Korean Daelim (KIA Automobile Group) made a heavier Cruiser called Daystar 154 Kg dry weight. Both these brand new bikes will be ready for me to collect this Thursday 11/6/2015. One of the SMC staff showed me an 800 cc Ducati Scrambler 2015 model. Dry weight is 176 Kg. Wet weight is 192 Kg. Seat height is 790mm. Ducati Scrambler is quite a light weight for the power. I quite like it. I will be comfortable with that bike. I have given up Motorcycle hobby 30 years ago. I used to ride Honda and Yamaha 125cc in 1983. Now the motorcycle bug has bitten me again. I would like to ride a big and heavier bike such as Harley Davidson Cruiser. I will speak to KK Driving School in Sheffield to see whether they can train me for a bigger and heavier bike! OR I may have to settle with Standard size bike such as Ducati Scrambler or Harley Davidson Sport 883? In the mean time, I will go to Gym to strengthen my both Upper Limb and Lower Limb muscles.

  9. Honda water cool over 1000 cc engine size probably weigh around 250 Kg to 300 Kg. I dropped the bike at the walking speed during the down hill, a private road entrance where we could not ride properly, I had to push the bike while sitting on it and the engine was idling. Then I realized that the bike was so heavy and I could not keep it upright. Eventually I had to drop it to to save my leg/ foot. Fortunately, the bike was not damaged or scratched. It was a controlled drop. More training needed. If you can sit on it and push with your feet at walking pace, you could have ridden the bike under its own power and it would have been stable. All bikes whilst moving are stable. You can ride at a very slow speed and it won't feel heavy. Also what were you doing riding such a big bike if you were not confident?? Excellent question. I did not anticipate that the road I had to go into my friend's house was so uneven that I could end up like this. On the main road, the bike is light and no problem of handling. Definitely, I will need to go for further training at the professional riding school. Anticipating is the key for the biker safety I suppose. This incident was 30 years ago and I gave up biking. Now I would like to ride again as I get older before I lose my health!!!
  10. Manx TT Racing is coming soon. I worked at Noble Hospital, Douglas, IOM from 1994 to 1996. Fantastic mood on the Island. Roaring loud sound from these racing bikes and the crowd. Fantastic experience watching them these very brave riders. Joey Dunlop was the star during that time. Sadly he has gone forever during one of the races on the island a few years later, after I left the island in 1996. ( My colleagues from A&E were stand by for the race. One or two casualty every year even at the practice run.) That is one of the reason that TT Race is so popular. Very difficult course to ride for racing. I do not routinely watch a circuit race on man made dedicated racing track. I will try to watch on TV this year races. I really admire their skills and courage of these riders...Very graceful to see their trunning corners at high speed, touching the ground with their knee while their face was looking at the direction of the travelling, searching for the exit route.. .
  11. Honda water cool over 1000cc engine size probably weigh around 250 Kg to 300 Kg. The lessson I learnt from that mistake is that while there is a decent motion, the bike is very light. No problem of weight or height, But when I have to ride at an extreme slow speed due to bad road condition, the bike becomes very heavy and I could not manage to keep the bike upright. My concern with any heavy bike is that in the event of an emergency break, if I can not handle the weight of the bike, then I will fall again. This time, I may not be very lucky because of the speed involved. I am scared to ride again any heavy bike, May be, I am too cautious. Safety is my main priority on the road, not the speed. But I feel like, I want to try again on big heavy bike. At present, I am scared to ride any heavy bike. I weigh 64 Kg and 5'7" tall. Body Mass Index ( Height & weight Ratio) is spot on at the middle of the centile. I do not have confidence or enough strength to manage the bike which is more than double of my weight. That will be around 128 Kg dry weight bike. Maximum 150 Kg. The seat height will be around 700mm, preferably low centre of gravity bike. If I can not lift the bike back to vertical upright position from 45 degree leaning position while the bike is static or not in any motion, I will not ride that bike. My confidence has gone completely!
  12. Only if you don't put your feet down when you realise this is going to happen and your balance might go. you stop and put your feet (or a foot) down. My own view on moving up to larger bikes and the nervousness that comes with that is: its best if you CAN put your feet down, both of them. there are very few bikes out there that cannot be adjusted to suit any rider who is near 'average' height. 5'7 is only 2 inches below the average height of an adult male in this country. (and incidentally is 4" taller than the average woman.) Most bikes will have that amount of adjustability built-in - most are designed to 'fit' the average Man or Woman. or if not.. then it can be adjusted relatively inexpensively. seats can be lowered. the whole bike can be lowered. you can use footwear that adds a little to your height... there are a whole load of different ways of dealing with a problem. saying: is giving up before you even try.. and thats just daft. Many thanks for your time and an excellent explanation. Yes. You are right, perhaps I am too cautious. I have seen injured bikers at work in A&E. I myself had a fall from a big heavy bike and I could not lift the bike back. People around me had to help me. Really scared to ride a big bike again. Perhaps, I need to go to Gym to strengthen my legs and arms. Together with a lower seat bike or a modified bike, then, I will give another go!!
  13. Thank you. Good to know that I am not the only one in this world. I will visit DRS. It is very encouraging to know that there is a specialist bike shop who can sort things out for us. Cheers! Htin
  14. Hi. Can someone help me to understand this concept of Weight Ratio of the rider and the bike itself.!!! Bikes are on two wheels and they are inheriently unstable especially at near stall speed / or at a very low speed and in this situation, I could fall easily. How the rider ( who has a small frame or a short height or shorter legs ) can ride these heavy big powerful motorcycle such as Harley Davidson or Hughe Honda Cruisers! I really admire their skills and their courage. I have seen a man who can not reach to the ground by any of his legs when he sits on the saddle. The rider is short but his bike is very high for him. What will happen at traffic lights or at any start & stop in the traffic ques ? I am 5'7" tall and weight is 10 stones 7 Lbs. I do not think I can ever ride a big and powerful bike. At present my bikes are 125cc smaller and lighter bikes ( around 120 Kg for Suzuki Van Van and Yamaha 125cc YBR Custom and 145 Kg dry weight for South Korean bike made by KIA motor such as Deli "Day Star" 125 VL 18Hp) Bikes become heavier and bigger when it reaches 1000cc engine size. Mind you, Ducarti Scrambler is not so bad. 800cc engine size and the weight is around 150Kg. At present, I can only ride a small or lighter bike. Practice makes perfect but I felt that I would not be safe if I have to ride these big & heavy powerful bikes on the streets! Thank you. Htin
