Just to be clear, I am not going to do this commute five days per week every week; I will use the bike when the weather is good and might even take the odd detour into Wales on the way home when I feel like it.

Thanks for the advice. I quite fancy some sort of BMW F800; the GT looks nice but might be a bit above my budget but the F800S seems affordable. I'm also going to look at the ER6F, SV650, NC750, I wonder how painful it would be on a CBF250.

I used to ride a CG125 for fun 15 years ago but I'm shortly going to facing a daily commute of 60 miles each way, mostly cross country single carriageway A & B roads but with some predictable congestion at the work end. I want to get a bike so I can do some of the commuting on it. I don't fancy 120 miles per day on another CG125 so I'm going to do Direct Access but assuming I pass, what should I buy? I don't want to spend much more than £3000 if possible but I'd like something that will be fast enough to be fun, comfortable and reliable enough for potentially 600 miles per week and handy enough to get through a few traffic queues in Telford. I'd prefer it to use less fuel than a car too if possible please; any ideas folks?
