Shark D'skwal
by
SometimesSansEngine » Sun Mar 31, 2019 10:16 am
After a year of ownership I've replaced my first ever helmet, my Shark D'skwal. It seems like a popular model at an entry level price point so thought I'd post up the good and bad in case it helps.
The good
The price point is pretty realistic for people getting into motorcycling. You can pick them up for £149.99, and mine was even cheaper as the dealer was having an offer on helmets that weekend. I think I paid about £115ish in the end, and that included the pinlock visor.
It includes a...

Shoei GT Air
by

Bought this helmet to replace an Array that I dropped, had never owned a Shoei before so this was a suck it and see exercise, bought online from SBS, item arrived well packaged and delivery only took a day, always iffy about buying helmets online but from experience know that SBS will exchange them with no quibble and no hassle.
Helmet comes with chin curtain, nose guard (breath deflector), helmet bag and pinlock insert, from the minute I took it out of the box I was impressed, oozes quality...

Shark Evoline 2
by
Throttled » Wed Sep 25, 2013 6:27 pm
Bought Oct 2012 for £180, reduced as the Evoline 3 had just come onto the market.
Flip over chin bar. The series 2 needs the visor opened before the chin bar can be flipped, the series 3 does not. I do not consider that to be a deal breaker. I can easily flip the chin bar either way on the move, it clicks into place either way. As an open faced helmet it still has a lot of protection with only the tip of my chin exposed. The visor comes all the way down and I ride that that most of the...

mike_1984 » Tue Sep 05, 2017 11:06 am
Bought this as i needed a helemt (was on my way to buy my bike, 10 mins after cbt  )
Certifed 4/5 on the sharp rating plain black, quick release visor and only £20!
The lining comes out so can be washed which is a plus and it has a few vents on the sides and top/front only the front two can be opened or closed though.
Pros:
*Cheap
*decent sharp rating
*visor and lining easy to remove to clean
*Nice snug fit, comfortable

Lets get straight into this
First off buying this helmet the interior was SUPER ABRASIVE! To the point of casuing several rashes on my face and forehead for the first week or so due to its mesh like hygenic design
However this thing now fits like a dream! Comfortable snug but a little tightaround the cheeks still as i keep biting the inside of my mouth when i talk .. (Expected)
The noise level is superb its like being in a little bubble there are small gaps behind the ears that could...

AGV GT Veloce
by
rapid » Fri Jul 01, 2016 9:35 am
I have recently bought an AGV GT Veloce in blue and white. Here are my thoughts.
AGV GT Veloce Monterey
Price: £329.99
Bought from: sportsbikeshop.co.uk
Fitting:
All my previous helmets are Shark helmets. I have a bit of an odd shaped head which means I struggle to find a helmet that fits perfectly. My Shark helmets have always either been a bit loose or a bit tight. This AGV is superb in terms of fitting. It fits like a glove, very comfortable. The lining inside feels like much better...

Roof Boxer V8
by
Paul-Kent » Sun Nov 22, 2015 4:55 pm
Had this nearly a year now, originally was quite uncomfortable but I persevered with it by using it on short trips to break it in
It's now very comfy.
Pros
Excellent versility, I love the removable chin strap that allows you to ride open face
Cons
Wind noise! It's terrible, I've learned to turn my head ever so slightly to one side and this reduces it
Easily marked. I bought the matte black one and fingerprints show up so easily, and it also scratches with not too much effort also.
Replacement...

Biltwell Gringo
by
satansmeerkat » Wed Jun 03, 2015 3:14 am
I've had a Biltwell Gringo for little over a year now.
It's a vintage 'open-faced' helmet styled on the old-school full-faced helmets of the 50's, 60's and 70's.
I picked one up for £139 from the interwebs. Going rate is about £150 though.
I picked it because it was a compromise between the styling of an open-face and my love for my jaw, mouth and nose, in the event that I ever spontaneously developed a taste for gravel when I'm out riding. It does not come with a visor and keeps everything...

Shoei nxr
by
GazW » Sun Feb 08, 2015 6:30 pm
Just bought one of these in matt black for £380.
It came with a free 'race' visor.
I have come from a previous shoei albeit a much older one.
I have a shoei shaped head, all the other major brands I've tried on don't fit anywhere near as well.
On to the lid.
It came in matt black, it's an extra £90 for graphics, and I can't justify that. They both look the same from the inside.
It's light, extremely comfortable, and incredibly quiet. I have never experienced a helmet like it, I thought my...

Don't use this a huge amount as I prefer an open face. However thought I'd throw up a review. It's an old model so I think they can now be found fairly cheap.
The Good
Comfortable
Micrometric Buckle
Closable vent on front
Flip up mechanism is easy to use even with a thick glove
Despite being heavy it feels light on the head
Well finished, doesn't seem to scratch easily.
The Bad
Supplied Visor is not pinlock ready. I believe you can buy ones that are though.
Liner is not...

Had this for about 18 months. I think I paid around £30 in a sale currently ghostbikes sell it for £59.99
The Good
Micrometric Buckle (I like these easy to use with gloves on or in a hurry)
Looks decent
Reasonably comfy once worn in
The bad
Sizes are a bit small you may need a size up from normal.
Not a lot to conclude with this one. Looks ok, decent buckle. Comfortwise it takes a while to wear in once worn in it's comfy enough. At £30 I am happy with it, at the current price of...

AGV K3 (Matt Black)
by
Boothy » Sun Oct 02, 2011 11:21 am
Price: £105
When bought: 2 months ago.
Good points: The way it fastens is very easy (Micro-metric adjustment buckle is the proper name), very comfortable, no water gets in and effective ventilation system. Visor very easy to remove.
Bad points:
This may seem like a very minor point but its very irritating... the little tab to lift up your visor is on right hand side (your front brake and throttle hand) whereas it makes more sense for it to be on the left). Tad noisy on higher speed corners...

I've had this helmet just shy of a month. Specifically this one: ... rod/194056
For those who can't be bothered reading a load of text I'll do a quick score breakdown:
Comfort: 4/5 (Lose one due to wind guard catching on my chin)
Noise: 4/5 (Seems noisier than my old RST, however am on a quicker bike now with different screen type)
Ventilation: 3/5 (They work great, but the chin vent is an arse to find when moving)
Value: 4/5 (Sells for £299.99 but I got mine for £220. But I would of paid...

The upgraded Trip, as in it the same helmet but you can add blue tooth (of which I know nothing).
I went for this helmet as it is flip front, has a slide down sun visor, a 5 star safety rating and it comes in nice plain colours.
GOOD
The flip front, the visor, the safety rating and the colours.
The overall ventilation.

Ok, so some of you probably know that i've been looking for a new helmet for a while now, well i finally ended up buying a Shoei xr1100. Pure and simple it was THE best fitting helmet that i tried on bar none! And i tried on almost every other brand of helmet out there.
Got it through today, and i think it looks great, got it for £289 which is not bad considering at full retail they go for 419 ish.

Dedided i wanted a helmet with an inner sun visor so obvious first choice was caberg.
Looked at the flip fronts and the ego and was undecided at first but when pushed by the wife for a decision the ego won out.
It is the comfiest best fitting helmet I have ever had it feels light, as its the helmet i wear for rideouts and long distances I always use ear plugs with it but it seems no worse than any oither for noise.
The helmet has a quick release strap and a sun roof, yep thats what they call...

Got this lid at the BMF in May. Been very pleased with it so far... :D
The following are just my opinions/observations
Good Points:
Very comfortable......lightest lid I've ever known
Good Ventilation......with the internal vents open I can feel the air coming through them
High Safety rating.....Sharp 5 star, ACU Gold etc
Nice carry holdall.....and also a carry sack

Arai Axces
by
dimmers » Tue Dec 06, 2011 1:43 pm
got hold of this helmet for free (long story why, so won't post here).
my previous Arai was the condor model, which is now discontinued, so this is apparently the replacement model.
comes in black or white, has a pinlock ready visor, nice venting, is very stable at speeds, bit more wind noise than the condor but not really a problem.
overall, really nice helmet, cost £245 in Hein Gericke at the moment, also got a Ride recommends award.

its and old helmet now as there is a new model but ive had mine 2 years and it was my first helmet so i cant really compare it to any others but its a great helmet, quite light, looks good, love the pinlock visor on it
bad points is it does make a lot of wind noise at like 50mph+ but ear plugs get rid of that and the vent bits on it seem to do nothing at all :P
but a great helmet when i come to getting another one i think i will look at shoei helmets :)

Schuberth C2 Flip Front
by Chris123 » Tue May 28, 2013 12:52 am
This is perhaps more a helmet for touring than everyday zipping about.
It has a flip front with a drop down sun visor. I hated it. It was expensive. It was noisy. And the drop down sun visor mechanism broke after less than a year.
Having said all that, I bought it because it was getting great reviews at the time from all corners of the biking community so maybe mine was just a bad one. I wouldn't buy another one though!

I got this as the Can-Am XC-3, but it is their rebadging of the Scorpion VX-15 Air. It was £99, bought May 2012. The 'Air' refers to a pump that can inflate and deflate the cheek linings to get the perfect fit.
GOOD
Lovely fit, very comfortable, the air pump means you do get a range of firmness to the cheek pads.
Huge opening, very wide view. I find I can only see the tip of the peak and the top of the front of the chin guard.
Surprisingly quiet, in that it is not deafeningly loud!

I bought this one at the BMF show this year for £120 - The normal price is around the £150-£160 mark so it is mid priced one.
The criteria I was looking for particularly were
Good fit (obviously this is going to be a very individual thing)
Weight (my Shoei Duotec felt particularly heavy after a while)
D-ring fastening or similar (with a clip one I find the fit loosens over time and you only tend to notice when you hit the motorway and it gets wrenched backwards)
Visibility

Bought recently to replace my old Duchinni lid. Prices between £80-£100, got it from Lids Direct for half price so pretty happy with it. Comfy, quieter than Duchinni (still need ear plugs but that may be due to my can  ), drop down sun visor - easy to operate, pinlock prepared, vents seems to be finally working, proper size breath guard and working chin guard, visor release mechanism quick and easy to use. I got this helmet for £180 from a motorbike dealer.
I was not disappointed. It fits well, it's light, it's comfortable, and it has a sunvisor that flips down.
The air vents are OK, but not fantastic and the visor is easy to remove for cleaning.
The only little niggle I had with it was the fact that the little piece of plastic on the chin guard, designed to stop your breath misting up the visor, falls out really easily.
Apart from that, a top helmet!

I purchased this 4 years ago, wanted a flip lid as i wear glasses and this had a drop down sun visor so it was my top choice.
It fits well and the flip front is easy to use and access, its also easy to access the flip down sun visor.
The ventilation is good, and I hardly ever steam up.
Its easy to take apart and clean and really comes completely to bits so everything can be scrubbed.
The only problem after 4 years is the visor seal has split and it cannot be replaced so I need a new lid....

Brought this about 18 months ago when I had an insurance payout. Paid £369 for it and to be honest it is better than the RX-7 I had before. Reasonable low noise when all the vents are shut but obviously a bit noisier when all of the 5 vents are open. Two in the head, one in the chin and two at the top of the visor to get through flow past the face.
Great fitting helmet with no movement, snug and works really well with an added breath gaurd. Never fogged up due to pinlock visor.

Bad points:
Noisy above 40MPH, lets water in, visor scratches VERY easily, foam inside too soft, poor quality chin curtain, poor quality visor mechanism, ventilation system does nothing and its like having a sumo sitting on your face at 70ish MPH. Oh and steams up stupidly easy.

Arai RX7 Corsair
Bought for £350 (in sale should have been £500) in 2005
Good points: Fits lovely, feels so comfortable.
Bad points: I cannot for the life of me work the arai visor removal system! The only time the visor was removed was either in a bike shop or at the arai stand at the MCN Live events. It is a right royal pain in the arse!!! I think the problem is that im too gentle with it, you have to be firm and rough... just not my style! When I tried to be rough with it a broke the side...
