why cant i change gear now ?

#1 Post by loopinheed » Mon May 14, 2018 12:40 pm

hi everyone...signed up to TMBF as i need some advice.
passed cbt 14 months ago & was doing great & i passed the theory/hazard tests 3 weeks ago.
ive noticed lately that im freezing & hesitating to change up gears & i dont know why.
this has not been a problem before.
confused why im being like this especially after 14 months of riding even through the winter months to work.
i have a honda cbf 125 & my confidence has taken a blow.
just wondering if anyone else has had this as its doing my head in.

Hi loopinheed,

Your not the first and wont be the last to have your confidence knocked,

Youve been riding through the winter on a 125

Is it possible your subconsciously keeping in lower gears because thats where the most acceleration is?

You could be afraid you cant get out of trouble in a higher gear?

Sounds like you need a bigger bike because youve found the 125 limitations

One of our guys ( @BigHeavy1095 ) had similar problems, after he upgraded to a bigger bike his confidence grew back

Of course Im just Speculating a possibility

Is it you specifically or is it a mechanical issue? ... ie clutch needs adjusting , chain needs adjusting as these items can affect a smooth gearchange .

And miles to go before I sleep.

As the op says they are freezing and hesitating I presume it's them and not the bike

Get some lessons, get a test booked and give yourself something to work towards, a good instructor will help with any issues.

thanks for all the replies everyone..glad im not the only one who has had this.
found a quiet road yesterday & went back & forth until i managed better gear changes.
this seemed to help a lot & confidence came back a bit.
ive been angry with myself past couple of weeks as i wasnt like this before.
my plan was to try for a full bike licence this summer but need my smooth gear changes back....i refuse to give up :violin:
2 weeks ago my bike slipped out of gear when i was on the main road at 60mph & i got a bit of a scare at the time.
this might also be part of the problem.
ill ask my biker mate to look over my bike when he comes back from holiday.
thanks again everyone....glad for all the replies.

Yep, I had similar confidence issues.
See thread - viewtopic.php?f=27&t=65943

The best advice I can give you is to get out on the bike as much as possible, the more you ride the quicker your confidence will come back. If you've got mates who also ride (particularly mates with full licences) get and out ride with them. I got professional help, My instructor didn't just teach me to pass the test, he taught me how to ride all over again. Stop putting off training and test, just go and get it done. get it done and get a bigger bike.

If its only slipped out of gear once, it's probably nothing. sometimes it just happens especially if your shifting particularly quick. If it happened more than that, It probably just wants an oil change or the clutch adjusting.

Where about in the country are you? Maybe somebody on here would be willing to go out for a ride with you sometime and give advice based on actually seeing your riding.

I'm from Scotland.
I'll contact my mate to go out as he gives great advice.
Gear changing was a bit better going to work but not as smooth as I was before.
Just think it's odd that it's happening now after all this time .
Thanks again everyone...I'll get there eventually
