My advice is when you pass your test, don't be tempted to buy anything stupidly fast or heavy like I did. Get something easy to ride like a Duke 390 to build your confidence and skills. I bought a zxr400 then a ZX6R and neither were very practical for using in town, they looked good but were race track bikes. The (109bhp) 600 was so incredibly fast it put me off bikes for 12 years.. Now I love my KTM Duke 390, still fast but lots of fun and easy to ride.
Don't take my word for it mind, look what is MCN's sub 500cc bike the year 2017 :D

Welcome

As a counter to the above the bike will only go as fast as you want :D

Absolutely and I agree. The problem with me was though, the temptation to open the throttle was beyond endurance  :D

It depends on the engine configuration too. Plenty 600 + twins and even some litre 4s like the CBF are newbie friendly. I dont think the typical sportbike 600 IL4 is very well suited to the roads, unless all you do is hoon. I find more enjoyment in engines with a more even spread of torque due to the greater flexibility offered.

Most motorways around Glasgow are fine on a 125 tbh, but obviously you need a full license first.
