Like post above says, check out the Chassis and bulkhead. If they are sound you have a good motor.

Chassis can be replaced, worth doing of the rest of the parts are good.

They have just stopped making Landrover Defenders a few weeks ago. Good ones will appreciate in value even more now.

I have had Discoveries for the last 12 years, currently got a 19995 (M) plate running on LPG. Bought it 5 years ago, with 173,000 on the clock. Currently done 210,000.

Good luck with yours.

Yep I am landy mad there is no doubt :) I have a 110 as well as a Disco at the moment and I have shared a few threads on here about the different rebuilds :) http://themotorbikeforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=55642

If you pop over to www.nickysmith.me there are a few of the restoration stories I have done on there as well :)

As for advice the same as above but beware they become bloody addictive!

I had a freelander for a little over a year and LOVED it (Though not a true landy I know)

Can't wait until the day I can get another proper, mud chomping, 4x4! :D

My partner currently has a Suzuki Jimny, which although perfect for his job, does get quite a bit of family flack

I did an investigation a few years ago now regarding a Land Rover that was involved in a bad crash.

The Land Rover heritage centre at Gaydon are brilliant at providing information against a chassis/engine number as they keep a register relating to every Land Rover built and they can even tell you the spec when it came out of the factory.

I seem to recall it was a free service and they were really helpfull people.

Just a bit of uslesss information really

Thanks i will check them out :)... i have grown up with land rovers what i can remeber my dad owning when i was about really tiny bop... series 3 bof 64 it recently found as a pile of parts sad times. 90 Swb country that was nice he had a v8 range rover vogue witch he stripped i had fun stripping with him. and i remember a safari lwb he know only has the 110 its a shared father and son project.

chassis has little bit of surface rust but its solid exhaust has rotten out.

  • 4 weeks later...

is it actually knocking yet it if isnt then if it is the big ends worn you might getaway with getting the crank polished rather than reground and just fit a new set of shells and the crank oil seal isnt expensive either and would need doing at the same time you do the crank anyway

Hey dude, its not knocking yet there is abit of noise, runs like a dream starts of the key happliy its driverable. Funds for the landy is going on hold until i have sort my test, and the er5 had no interest. Until this sells stuck tweddling my thumbs ....

Well april comes a long ill be a busy bee working my socks off

so if there is a rumbling and the big ends are not knocking then it could be water pump bearings or alternator bearing gone dry from being parked up but crank seal would either not leak or would leak as they are only a standard seal like a fork seal is but im like stu confused that almost but not quite..............................seems a common problem

My friend where the landy is sitting is a day to day mechanic he has stated they are on the way out. The engine was fitted in 2004 non asperated engine. Also the old man said when he revs it up then the revs drop there is a clatter noise. So futher investergation :( i am not big on the diesel engines
