3D printers

Anyone got one?

Been after one for a while but at same time don't want another expensive unused toy. Had a look over last couple of days and some real cheap budget ones about now, so thought I'd see if I can get anything decent for cheap as possible.

Ordered a A8 (prusa i3 clone) for £80, and a bunch of upgrade parts for another £40, plus a lot of printable upgrades available for it once it's up and running.

My main aim is to see if you can really turn a sub £100 (ok well with purchased parts just over) printer into something worthwhile and usable.

Should also have an old Xbox Kinect in loft somewhere which is a hackable 3D scanner.

So if anyone wants a whistle don't go on Amazon just yet

I am thinking of trying to print some fairing :thumb: more just to see if it can be done, obvious main issue is the size but ER5 has some smaller parts (side pieces under tank) which should be printable if I can get a decent scan of them, far too fiddly to design myself.

I thought they already made there own hand guns, plenty of files out there unfortunately, I keep trying to convince my self I don't need a cnc plasma cutter.

Oh but you do ... your existence will seem worthless and empty without one 😉

That's the same damned thing I hear when I look at them.

We have one at work, the table it works on is less than a sheet of A4 so any object made is fairly small.

we have placed work to outside specialists, a recent project was create a full size engine mock up.....it wasnt cheap.

The finish on it is quite rough so not really suitable for a fairing id say.

It can also be brittle if the sections are thin,we have however run some rapid protoype parts in engines before but not a structural item

The detail achieveable can be quite astonishing, i have a pic at home of a minature V8 engine that we made for a long served employee as a leaving gift, will post it up when I can.

I’d be interested to see that, with the approx dimensions if you can?

3d printing has developed from the first incarnation.

It used to be restricted to plastics with little mechanical strength but was great for rapid prototyping. Things move on apace.

Now it is possible according to claims, to print titanium assemblies and devices. It is claimed that stainless steel can also be printed using the latest Atomic Diffusion Additive Manufacturing method.

We are no longer restricted to flimsy plastics, but now fibreglass, carbon fibre, Kevlar, stainless steel, and titanium parts can all be printed from a humble 3d printer costing an absolute fortune. Such is life.

I love it when a plan.... morphs completely out of control.

So it’s agreed, Via will invest heavily and master new technologies to print our very first superbike.

Deadline?

12 days. I mean how hard can it be to print out what's basically a glorified picture that just happens to be a groundbreaking superbike. Can I also suggest it carries forum branding.

I'm happy to be test pilot, as long as there is no requirement of riding skill or useful feedback. Send me your addy Via and I'll be there in 13 days time to ride the homemade superbeast.
