MOT question

Guys, I have just discovered that my MOT has expired. I thought it was good until October! My mistake but nevertheless, I have to get it tested. Now I know that I can book it in for a test and ride it to the garage but there is one place that I always take it to and the only place I truly trust and am comfortable with. The problem is that since I have moved, it is now 45 miles away.

Is that a stretch or will the law still accept it?? It will be booked in and I will be taking it directly to the garage.

As long as you book it in with the garage you’ll be ok , I’ve not heard it had to be booked in at nearest station to you .

Thanks Six ... It was more to do with the distance. I live in Pontypool now and my trusted garage is in Bristol. Thought the plod might assume i'm taking the piss or something!

Couple of lads from my homeland so they are and on more than one occasion they have made minor repairs and passed with no additional charge to be sure to be sure!

You should be fine, but take a copy of your old certificates if you have any. It shows why you're going to that MOT place.

I've known classic car guys try to get a car home using a pre-booked MOT and plod has picked them up. In that case it's a giveaway as the MOT place is near their home address whereas the car still shows as being registered at an address miles away. So the distance can be an issue they'll check if they think you're pulling a dodgy arrangement.

That won't apply in your situation so you'll be fine. Last few cars I did I used a tester 30+ miles away as they knew classic cars. Never had a problem.

What's wrong with the nearest one ? They all examine to the same standard . You must have something dodgy to hide if you're prepared to do a 90 mile round trip . 😕

I asked a motorbike cop cupl years ago I was buying a bike from Portsmouth and I asked him if I booked it in to an garage in Cardiff can I ride it and he said yes there is no distance as long at its is booked just make sure when you book it they take the reg down and it's in there mot booking book .. then said hes actually done it himself which i thought yeaa your a copper no ones going to stop you .. then the next part was he never even went to the garage for the mot . Naughty boy .. I'd do the distance thing but I'd still have the mot done .

Nothing wrong with 2 trailers there is an exemption for

Specialised vehicles transporting circus and funfair equipment

Think farmers absolutely they are speed limited.

I bought a van in Inverness and booked it in for an mot 240miles away, yes it's legal but prob a very thin argument and no defence if a vehicle is found to have defects

All tests are THEORETICALLY to the same standard. Not sure I believe that. It if it needs work to pass not all work us to the same standard.

No idea about OP but I have garages I have trusted and ones I would rather not.

Ah well that's a different matter. I was assuming that no work was required to pass .

Absolutely nothing doggy to hide at all Bob. This garage has done everything on my bikes since I been riding and I prefer to stay with people I know and trust. I'm sure I'm not the only one. Bit unfair to assume I'm dodgy to be honest!

You would be lucky to see a copper so crack on

well, that is true Stu but knowing my luck, if there was something to charge me with there would be one round the corner! lol

Yeah I know that feeling! It's sods law isn't it

A mate of mine is a mechanic/mot tester/garage owner and he has bought many cars from darn sarf and booked them in at his place for mot and drove them back!

Any that are totally un roadworthy he has had them transported

From the Ask The Police website...

The law makes no mention as to how far you can go for an MOT but we would suggest the distance is kept as short as possible because even though you are exempt from having a valid MOT certificate in the circumstances described above, if you are stopped by the police you could still be prosecuted for any defective parts on your vehicle e.g. exhaust, brakes and tyres etc. If you call in at shops etc. on your way to the MOT, it may be held that you are using the vehicle for other purposes and the above exemption won't apply. The further you travel the more likelihood there is of your vehicle triggering an ANPR camera and you being stopped.

That's fair enough. To be honest, any defect MOT'd or not is liable for prosecution and rightly so. I am not aware of any problems with it anymore than I would be if it had a ticket on it.
