Is it bad to underuse an engine?

Thinking as I rode along this morning and wondered;

Is it bad for a bike to not use it's full potential? I probably spend by far the majority of my commute in the 3-7k RPM range and not pushing hard at all. I will occasionally when pulling away give it the beans but usually not. Does this do the engine/bike any harm? Should i ring its neck every now and again?

What is known as an Italian tune up.

Motorcycle engines generally are much more robust than most people realise. A good hammering does them no harm so long as the engine is fully warmed up. What kills them is poor maintenance or being hammered from cold.
