WOW I've just had my eyes opened.....

Recommended Posts

And my wallet!

I went to Hein Gericke today to have a look for some boots, gloves, protective clothing and a lid.

I've had a good look around and decided to go for the following...

Helmet: AGV S4 £169.99

Gloves: Alpinestars SP-2 £69.99

Boots: Alpinestars smx 4 £139.99 OR SMX+ £179.99

Jacket/legs - I have no idea!

Can anyone recommend any clothing, as I have no idea what to look at. Eveything seems so expensive, and I wouldn't really want to spend much more than £200.

Also, I'm not really up to date with motorbike supplies and prices, so I might be wrong here, but are Hein Gericke's prices a bit steep? Again, it's probably just me! I'd be interested to hear of your chosen suppliers, and if any one uses/would use the Internet for such items.

Cheers

spent 400 quid on leathers, 200 on lid, 170 on boots, 80 on gloves etc...

Not sure about outlets but have a look at Akito clothing, PythonII jacket and trousers are great value (£140ish with trousers free with jacket) and as waterproof as any. Added advantage is they'll zip together with other Akito stuff all of which is good and reasonably priced.

Hein gerecke arent that great on prices, seen same things alot cheaper elsewhere.

really what you ve picked out there is cheap stuff.

get the best you can afford, i spent 2k this week on new kit.

i got 2 pairs of the smx boot because they are v good.

and i got the same gloves as you listed.

Leathers and lids are where big money goes, 400-450 is easy to spend on a good lid.

and 1k+ is easily done on good leathers.

As I have said before you dont need to go mental on a lid if you dont buy the latest upto date model but just buy a good make that fits well!

Never paid more than 100 quid for a lid had sharks agv and shoei.

same with boots Ihave oxtars they wernt the latest model and as such were 80 quid.

hein gericke own branded stuff is good quality I have the leather jacket and trousers had them 5 yearsbeen down the road a couple of times and there still spot on.

Gloves try some rst and equivalent.

With what you quoted the prices are because they were alpinstars!

Good quality gear can be had for much less!

You don't need to spend anything like £1,000 on leathers.....

I got mine from J and S for under £250.

Gloves £80

Helmet, Arai £330 and a Caberg £100

Sidi Boots....£130.

Ear plugs...50p

Good gear for less than £600 all in

Oh and its all been crash tested....boots 3 times!!!!

My Arai is overpriced.....ask Techno.

I've got my CBT next week and das in aug, and I need to buy gloves and boots. The centre said they have helmets I can use, but I'd rather buy my own really.

First of all, read this:

viewtopic.php?t=11973

Other things ...

HG stuff is usually pretty good.

The stuff you listed isn't expensive in the general scheme of things...

You can spend boatloads more than that on bike gear, assuming you could, or wanted to ....

There are certain things to look for when buying bike kit ...

Such as double stitching on leathers and gloves - certainly on key areas, or, preferably everywhere ...

Look for CE marked stuff too ...

There's only one pair of CE marked gloves on the market at the moment (see this months Ride magazine) but if you pick wisely you'll get good protection from 70 quid gloves ...

The other things worth bearing in mind ----> when you're actually in the process of picking stuff -- TRY IT ON - all at the same time -- you need to see how your leathers feel with your boots on, and whether your gloves go nicely over your cuffs (or perhaps under, if you were buying textiles)

There is a great HG advert in the press at the moment - they're doing

the PSX R2 jacket for £180 (please check the exact figure) but with FREE matching jeans...

That seems to be an absolute steal

There's loads I could tell you about this, that and the other - its a huge subject area ...

So .. PM me if you need any further advice - bike kit is my specialist area

I should be on Mastermind

Thanks for the reply.

HG told me yesterday about that deal, so may end up with that but like you say, I'll have to go and try it on next week.

I didn't actually think to try it all on at the same time - good little tip there.

Technically, you aren't required to wear boots for DAS - but as already indicated, if you have the means to buy some, you would be wise to do so!

Have a look at Puma, or TCX (formerly known as Oxtars)

I am just starting out but hein geriche was highly recomended by all my biking friends. I went to there store in Preston and was very pleased by their service and help.

Bought the full lot ; Their own leather (2 piece), alpinestar boots, their gloves and an agv lid - Came to just over £700.

With a bit of a haggle and getting one of their loyalty cards I got it down to £650 with a free leather care kit, i was very happy

Sounds similar to what I'm gonna get mate. £700 is a lot but should last a while, right?

Well the leathers, boots and gloves come with a 2 year manufcturing warranty - so the only way to damage those is wear and tear, but i would look at replacing them in 2 years anyway.

And they recomend a new lid every 2 years or so!

If you think that you will replace them in 2 years its only £350 a year, which is roughly 90p a day!

DOne over 300 miles in 2 weeks in all my gear and it is all great - comfy, warm but well vented, easy to get on and off etc etc

Will definately go back to them again.

However did buy my chain, lock, cover somewhere else as they were on the heavy side for all the peripherals (spelling!)

I bought some SMX4's yesterday but I bought the waterproof versions, they have a bit more padding and are obviously waterproof. I've worn them a couple of times and they are really comfy. :D

Its never an easy one to answer, i personally swear by Arai and wouldnt put anything else on my head, youve only got one brain after all.

Having said that they do fit me really well and you must buy a helmet that fits you because an ill fitting helmet is equally as dangerous.

You dont need to go for alpinestar boots as they arent cheap anywhere...you can get a boot thats is just as protective for half the cost. Again , try on lots of gloves till you get some that are right for you they dont have to cost a million quid either.

Key thing with jackets and jeans is that they have armour and very few manufacturers dont put CE armour in them nowaday.

theres no right or wrong only whats right for you . I like HG stuff and my mates swears by it but other than oil and filters ive never bought and of their stuff.

Just a quick update, went out and bought everything this afternoon.

I went for the 'Classic' jacket and bottoms that were also on special offer (buy the jacket, get the bottoms free). The jacket has built in back, shoulder, elbow protectors. Pretty impressed actually, got a half decent set up for 600 quid on the nose (after a bit of bartering!)

Oh by the way, thanks to Father Zed for the expert advice :thumb:
