Boots - What fits?

Hello everyone,

I have bought a second-hand pair of motorcycle boots, and they're lovely, besides smelling as if a cat has used one of them as a urinal. But never mind. The question arises as to what makes a suitable boot to wear. I know they should be boots without steel toecaps, but besides that, is it worth shelling out for biker specific boots if you are never going to do much more than pootle? What do people use?

Stiff sole that doesn't bend/collapse when pressure is put on it from the sides.

No laces to get caught in leavers/bolts/chain etc.

Toe pad - otherwise you'll wear through the leather in the toes with your gear shifter.

Thick tounge to provide some shin protection for when you rest the peg against your leg...

I wear bike specific alt bergs when on my bike. They are much more comfortable than using Doc Martin or similar I find.

Thank you, Arwen, a nice, helpful summary. My Richa boots have a strap that covers the laces, otherwise they are pretty much as you describe.

I am currently using cat boots. They are not ideal as they will wear out on top but they are comfy.

Ankle crush protection is key in case you lowside.

Unless you're riding some kind of low powered round town scooter then even on a 125 you can get to speeds where protecting your feet and lower legs is important. Those are the bits most prone to injury so I'd always wear bike specific boots. What fits is very much a case of trying on and find what suits you. I know a lot of people like to buy online but for boots you really need to get to somewhere like J&S and try several pairs on. You'll know the right ones when you put them on. Go for fit and comfort rather than style.

Yeah I like em a lot. I went for a 1 hour walk in the forest with them once cos I misread the plans, they were great. Bit squeaky mind.
