Learner Motorcycles and the Full Car License

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I need some clarification on the issue of learner bikes and the full car license. I've had a full car license since 1987 and have recently bought a Suzuki 125.

My question:

Once I have taken the compulsory CBT does this then entitle me to ride a learner bike for the duration of my car license thus negating the 2 year provisional license rule?

Many thanks

P.

Hi,

You need a provisional before you can do your CBT, your full car licence acts as a provisional :thumb: and you can ride your 125 with L plates on this. You CBT expires after 2 years, but your provisional never expires on your car licence.

So if for some reason I don't pass my motorcycle test within the two years, do I have to re-take the CBT?

Yes. Having a full car licence is totally irrelevant to motorcycle licensing other than acting as a provisional one for the sake of riding motorcycles.

The only minor exception is if you have held a full car licence since before 2001, in which case it does allow you to ride mopeds (legally meaning bikes up to 50cc) without a CBT. But anything larger, or gained later, it is the same as if you did not have the car licence.
