Smudge
hiHaving issues with my bike, it isn’t the battery as that’s new and has been checked. It starts but at times when I stop off it won’t start again. One garage said it was starter motor the other said starter clutch, difference is £300 plus any ideas? Thanks in advance been trying to sort for weeks!
linuxrob
Assume you mean the starter will not work?Do you here the start relay click? if so see if 12V is getting to the starer motor, if not then follow circuit in the manual from start button via clutch and side stand switches. if the starter motor spins very quick it is the starter clutch, if acts like a nearly flat battery the starter motor could have done what bandits do and start to fall apart.hope that helpsrob B
Smudge
Hi thank you, wish I could post video on here for you to listen to it. I’ll go through your reply next to my bike in the morning, really appreciate your advise
Grumpy Old Git
Both starter clutch and starter motor are usually eay fixes. In both cases (once you have checked that the motor does 'click' or spin), dismantle (use Haynes or youtube), clean, inspect, replace and broken bits (unlikely to be any apart from the thrust washer assy), rebuild, ensure all connections are secure. Done!If you do have the motor replaced, keep the old one - Strip and check (you may be able to fix it, otherwise keep for spares / service practice). fastbob
If it's intermittent then it's almost certainly muck and dust inside the starter motor. Strip and clean and fit a service kit while you're at it and it will be good to go . Get some fine Emery paper ( 2500 ) to polish the commutator plates . fastbob
Thanks! Job for the weekend As long as the carbon brushes aren't worn down to nothing you can usually get away with just a good clean. Halfords sell 2500 grit wet and dry paper . I bet you will find a lot of dust moving around inside it .
