Windows10 recent problems

#1 Post by rennie » Thu Apr 13, 2017 6:30 pm

my laptop has gone very slow over the last few days!
I've run allsorts! even done a system restore.
It's slightly better but still a lot slower than before!
Anyone else having problems? got a free fix?
I know there's an update due
Ian.

How old is your pc? Is it always slow, or just when you are doing certain things? Open resource monitor and see if anything is getting thrashed (CPU, RAM, HDD)

Sluggishness can be caused by many things.

It's less than a year old, just generally slow, F/B is the worst!
I've left Sue in charge while it does yet another scan
tried resource monitor nothing showing.
It's just about useable now but much slower than it was
Ian.

Hmm... A year old is one of the milestones for a dodgy hard drive. A big symptom of hard drive failure is sluggishness all the time.

There are many free hard drive diagnostics programs you can download that will tell you if your drive is failing. If you know the brand of your drive, of if your pc is a dell or Hp it's easy.

I know about the update, I don't think mine has done it yet,
it's a Toshiba.
I'll have a mess with it next week while I'm off,
I'll either fix it or throw it out of the F***kin Window!

The amount of hard drives i replace when they get to a year old is madness. I'd say maybe 3 in 10 fail their diagnostics around the year mark, after showing signs of sluggishness.
So i wouldn't be surprised if it was that.

Could also check for rogue programs or tasks running too. Resource monitor would tell you what service/programming is eating up resources.

Try and find ostest. it will test your harddrive :) have you tried a full factory reset? could be an update has not installed quite right :) also make sure its not downloading updates in the background as this will use up resource and slow your machine down

ok I appear to have found the problem!
It was an AVG free update that was causing the problem.
I have now removed most of it and all working well.
There is 1 avg program that won't let me uninstall
I'd love to get rid of it!
Ian.

What is the bit of software called that won't uninstall? I've seen a few fake virus scanners pretending to be AVG... As well as Norton and other legit software.

Generally there will be a how to guide somewhere on how to manually remove the fakes.
