I realise this was a family members bike so the desire not to have bike back on road .

However was the bike that severely damaged to be classed as unrepairable or is it just a personal preference for it not to back on road as itself ?

It's just a personal preference. I worked in the car industry some years back and the general vibe was if there was a fatality the car was crushed or scrapped for parts.
