May be a matter of having to Bob. My knees are getting worse , not better. Gotta try feet forward riding before I can't ride at all. Still keepin the Blade until then though!

We were talking to the guy who ran our local bike shop some time ago, and he was commenting on the fact that the largest current group of riders are in our age group. So I said that he should start selling cruisers specifically as all us old b*ggers are now getting to the age where we'll have to start looking at cruisers coz our knees are shot!......  He didn't take my advice....and has now shut down.....

   yeah....very good Alan....

Anyhoo....what's the plan for the bike then mate? Straight restoration.....or something a bit radical?

Wish I had the time for radical mate. Maybe if I do retire in July? Just gonna strip it, Powdercoat and paint everything black. Checkout engine, carbs, forks and drive mechanism. Make new "silencers" for it . Make feet forward controls and then try some long rides on it to see how my knees cope. In the distant future it may get triked.!!!

Very nice bike. I much prefer cruisers to any other type of bike, and I'm only a 'young'un' at 27.

Look forward to seeing pictures of it as you progress! (The interim stages are almost more interesting than the "It's DONE!" pictures, to me at least)

Thanks everbody for the encouragement. We pick the bike up on Saturday and I start fettling on Monday. Gonna spray some WD or 3in1 down the plugholes and turn it over by hand a few times. Gonna drain the oil and possibly drop the sumplate to make sure there's no big metallic lumps where they shouldn't be. It was last run in 2008 , so I don't wanna start doing the cosmetics until I know the drivegear is OK.

Sounds like a cunning plan Alan......

Hope you don't find any nasties when you drop the sump.....

I fancy a cafe racer project myself....but don't have the time or resources.....but I can dream....at least that don't cost......

Good luck with it mate.....put pictures up as you go along....... 8-)

Well went to pick up the VN yesterday. I must say I was a bit disappointed when I saw it. The front discs are knackered, the tank has a lot of filler on it and there seemed to be a lot of bits missing. Most of them, but not all, were in two plastic boxes! Anyway a deal is a deal , so I strapped it onto my trailer and got home about 1700. Did some work on it today. Eventually found a 18mm socket to remove the plugs, all 4 of them, squirted some WD40 in the combustion chambers and put the plugs back in. The headers had nothing holding them onto the heads and I thought I would need new ones, but today I found the split collars and rusty domed nuts to hold them in. Limitting myself to just doing work to start the engine, so I tried to refit the battery box that carries the solenoid, reg/rec, and coils, but it won't go under the seat until I remove the rear wheel. will de-rust and paint it tomorrow and refit it on Tuesday.

Well cylinders been soaked in WD40 for 3 days, so took ignition /alternator cover off today and very slowly turned crankshaft. No scraping grinding noises and nice n free moving. No wiring loom , so attached car battery to starter and spun it over. sounds good without plugs in. Next job is replace battery box with reg/rec, starter solenoid and coils attached and try to start the beast!!!

Some pix;

Engine with all 4 plugs removed.

Well no rust found in cylinders yet anyway! Next job is check sump for bits of metal etc. Fit oil filter, change oil and put electrics back in place to hopefully start it.. I suspect I,ll have to take carbs apart first though!!!

I live in hope mate. Would be nice to leave the carbs in place , as they are b'stard to get off and on. I'll try starting it first and see what happens. PMA might work

Some twins have 2 plugs per cylinder Ian . Better burn allegedly. they tried it on some 8 valve z1000s as well???

yup, My VN has 4 too.

Twin plugging the heads was a popular mod for Guzzis some years ago, for those who could afford it.

Haven't touched it for a while mate, been too busy doing exhausts and brackets for people to find time to work on my bike. I need to clean and paint the battery box next, bolt all the electrics to it and fit it under the seat. Then I will fit the wiring loom and ignition. Need to remove the sump plate from the engine, flush out any creepy crawlies and if all good, box it up and start it. Hoping to be retired in July, so hopefully have a bit more time then
