Fork clunk

Got a clunk sound from the forks on the Chinese.....at 30mph or less on rough road surfaces it makes the sound.

It had new head stock bearings fitted 2500 miles ago...told MOT tester about the noise...he could find no play and said all felt ok.

I have checked the calipers and rotors and wheel bearings...all ok.

Any clues??

Hi Ian. .......after the new bearings where fitted it was fine....no clicking......rode fine for 2,000 miles.

Then this clunk started ....its on the front suspension that i can tell.........but the cause. .....not sure

Think it will need a full strip down....lack of facilities and tools will put that on hold till till the warmer weather arrives.

Thanks Ian & Tango for the input.:thumb:

Hi Tim.......disc rotors are fine........top nut (it ain't a nut on the bike....it a flat thing with Allen key hole)is tight.....only clunks over rough surfaces.....can't make it clunk any other way.

Hi,

If the forks, brakes and wheels are fine, then l would say, get the front of the bike off the ground and check the headstock bearings for any signs of free play.

Hi Bob.......it's a WK650TR. .....in the rest of the world its a C.F.Moto 650TN............the forks are German...not Chinese :D

Right, just googled it , so its a Chinese " Big bike " Well they said it would happen eventually. The best way to get to the bottom of this is to strip the forks , take measurements and compare to manufacturers tolerances assuming this data is available. Could be worn bushes or maybe a loose cartridge. Other than that , having eliminated all external causes, its pointless trying to guess.

Internal to the forks is my guess - as suggested, a strip and inspect is required. You should be able to get the top end out without specialist tools or, do you have a local garage who will let you 'play' with their kit? (Might be worth an ask???).

Otherwise, I would suggest megawatt (Alan).

Hi GOG.............only big bike shops around (CMC) here.

Yes I agree it needs to be stripped....main dealers out of my pocket.

I only have basic tools......and limited room in my shed.....and the freezing weather is here

Iam going to try and have a look at it......as when i can.....

Thanks Fred

I would have said steering head bearings. Just coz they've been done doesn't mean the are still good or have been done right. If the steering head and brakes are clunk free, it may be internal sliding bushes that are worn and need replacing. Maybe price up this job locally or find some good replacement forks.

Gimme a shout if you still can't sort it.Maybe remove the fork legs, try em in a vice with springs and oil removed or post em to me to check.

Been thinking some more about this. Is it deffo coming from the forks? Could be something loose somewhere. Something under the tank, engine, seat. The speedo cable hitting the front mudguard etc. Check all over for loose items.

Hi, has the fork oil ever been changed! Depending on age of bike and mileage, may just need new fork oil. Most people seem to forget it will deteriorate over time, and you can end up with a clunking sound on knackered oil. And as megawatt recheck headstock bearing they may have settled, and need tightening down again.

Thanks Megawatt :thumb: .......let you know how things go.........just hope I don't freeze out there! :D

Oldgrump.....my bike only has 4,500 mile on it.....so I think the fork oil ought to be fine.

Thanks anyway guys. :thumb:

Didn't we have a mystery noise thread ages ago where the sound was actually coming from the riders helmet ?

yeah was either Westbeef or MR_W and one of their kids had posted something into a vent

Guilty.

I removed the culprit but my helmet still rattled over bumps. Does my head in but I know what it is at least

The next place to look in my experience would be the front mudguard and supporting bracket followed by all the fairing securing points and any underlying framework or bracketry that attaches the bodywork to the frame. Look also for cracked welds at all joints paying particular attention to the structure that supports the weight of the clocks, headlights and upper front fairing. That clunk could be hiding in there somewhere.
