CG125 Suddenly Started Spluttering

Recommended Posts

I have a 1983 Honda CG125. It's just had it's MOT and I've done about 300 miles with no issues in the last 4 weeks. Yesterday it just cut out - I thought perhaps it needed to go onto reserve but it usually splutters for a while beforehand and this didn't happen. I switched to reserve and it started - filled up with petrol 2 miles later. All was well until it just cut out when I stopped at a roundabout - I then had trouble starting it again (kick start). Had to fiddle around with the choke but seems to like being 'half way' at all times. It's now struggling in 3rd/4th gear and I have to change down and really push it to get it going. I filled up with premium petrol again in case it's a petrol sludge issue and pushed it hard down the dual carriageway for about 12 miles total yesterday. I've just taken it out again and it still seems spluttery in certain gears/ certain times, wanting to go down a gear and be pushed at high revs. Wondering if it could be the carburettor and if so - how I go about removing and cleaning it. Any advice most welcome!

Petrol Sludge is sludge made with petrol (instead of any other liquid).

Har-Har. But you're right. Can you get it in those squirt cans like Redex used to come in? 8-)

Not even a poor little CG125 deserves that..... gotta admit, I do have a soft spot for 'em..... That's just cruel.

I have a soft spot too , I've rebuilt nine of them in the past . I've still got various bits in boxes that I just don't seem to be able to throw away . Here's a few of mine . The bottom one is still showing as on the road , no idea what became of the others.

My first bike was a 2002 cg125 with the square headlight. Had a short 6 month life all at full throttle as I did believe I was Valentino rossi.......turns out I'm not

Nothing you can do to a CG is terminal . Things to check are , the plug ( get a new one anyway ) HT lead and plug cap , air filter , petrol filter and any loose wiring. BUT before you do any of that you get a Haynes manual and read it . The CG is about as simple as a four stroke bike gets so it's an ideal place to start your journey to becoming a mechanic. Why not post pics in the Projects and Restoration section .

1983? When was the inside of the fuel tank looked at? It's possible there's an accumulation of crud in the tank that's not helping matters. Changing filters and stripping the carb could only be temporary cures until the crud (if any) works it way back again.
