linuxrob
Wonderful job there, agree that the CB125 pipes are a vast improvement in looks, put some superdream silencers on my red CD175 winter bike in the 80's, the original pipes were still quite cheap but that seam was just very too "grandad" even for a CD175.Any luck with the plating? Been doing lots more, even some on the Z500. Noticed a nice effect. if you ignore all the advice about temp, multiple strikes and buffing just plate at 100mA per square inch for one 60 minute run. Then rinse well and into passivate solution at 10-15 degrees as opposed to 20-25 you get much more shinny parts. I was getting a silver CAD like finish which I was after but the other week for a bit of daft left the heater off and did these in one strike rinsed well and clear/blue passivated. Done a few more like this and it was not a fluke. can only assume that buffing was taking too much of the zinc off,
Bianco2564
linuxrob Thanks, the pipes are a little bit fatter than I would ideally like but will do for now.I'm not a great fan of the seamed type of pipe either. Not had a chance to tackle to plating, the main piece I was keen to plate was the front indicator stalks.Impatience got the better of me and I bought new .However I now have all the kit and ready to experiment on the next project
Bianco2564
Tack welded the pipes and removed them to be fully welded up.
Bianco2564
Got my welded up downpipes back today.Fitted back to the bike and connected up the silencers, all lines up pretty good, just got to decide whether to weld it all together or use clamps.Started it up and the engine sounds like the proverbial sewing machine, even got it warmed up and set the idle.I had refitted the chain earlier in the week, so with #1 grandson sat on the tank stuck it in gear and rode up the drive.First time its moved under its own power in around 19 years. Bianco2564
Finished the exhausts this morning, pleased with how they turned out.Pumped up the decades old tyres, put some fuel in and set off around the block. It ran absolutely fine but gutless although I did keep the revs sympathetically down,it is 50 years old next year.First impressions are the brakes are still crap, I have new front shoes to fit which should cheer it up, clutch didn't slip with its Royal Enfield springs and its got a lovely sound you get with a parallel twin. Can't say I would want to ride far on it, it feels very small and vulnerable.Need to look at the centre stand, its a bit bent and doesn't hold the rear wheel off the ground.Just the wheels to do, might buy a C90 wheel so I can practice on the spoke lacing before I rip these apart.Got a VJMC local ride out in a couple of weeks, hope this will be its debut outing and then the Rugby bike fest in May

Bianco2564
So tackled a wheel tonight, 15 mins with a hacksaw had the old rim stripped out.Laced it up ok, well 2nd attempt was and now I've got the layout in my head should be easier next time. Will have a go at tensioning the spokes tomorrow and truing it up. Bianco2564
Ordered some new mirrors for the Honda as I thought it looked a bit unfinished.I had fitted the number plate with normal bolts but didn't like the way it looked so got some M5 coach bolts instead, might paint them black so they blend in.All I've left to do is replace the wheel rims and spokes but I'm going to leave that until after the Rugby bike fest just in case it turns to sh1t. I came to say hello at 14:00 and you had gone . Never mind , some other time . I had to bail about 1.30, I'd been out the house since 8.45 and been getting a few comments from OH, "going on another bike thing?"Sorry about that and yes catch up another time.Next event for me will be the Daventry show in a few weeks.Good turn out again and good to see the town centre that busy.Honda ran well and seemed to attract a fair bit of attention.OH got a pic of me during the ride in. Bianco2564
After what seems ages, I managed to start work on 're building the front wheel.No1 grandson and me took the wheel apart and wire brushed and polished up the hub.Good experience for him, learning the skills and names of all the parts of the wheel and tools used. Bianco2564
Now that he's finished are you going to let him have his shoes back ? Lol, Yes held the shoes to ransom until the hub was clean. He seemed most interested in my magnetic bolt tray where I put the spoke nuts, he kept sticking it to various things in the garden and garage. Bianco2564
Finally got around to finishing the Honda wheel, only took 4 months Truing up wasn't too difficult just time consuming. The rims were only cheap ones off ebay and the join where its welded together isn't perfect and impossible to make the run out right but this doesn't seem to transfer into the tyre. And yes I know the front brakes not connected, I'm buying new tyres for it before its back on the road and I've yet to grind off the protruding spokes beneath the rim tape.Just the rear wheel to do next, hopefully not taking 4 months.
