Anyone had ECU flashed?

As per subject, but please Don't share experiences of power commander or booster plug here as solutions for the problem below. By all means create a new thread or review. :)

Bob has suggested that the factory mapping on my Versys is why the throttle is so snatchy and unpredictable at anything <=30 mph. It's so bad it spoils riding as town work is no fun I think he's right as it's only a couple of years old and the emissions rules have lead to a lot of bikes being like this.

I'm considering having the ECU flashed to solve this low speed fuelling problem, not arsed about any more power, just want to sort out the lower speed throttle issues

Has anyone else gone through this, any recommendations or would they not do it again? Any drawbacks?

Thanks

Seems more elegant and complete to do so.

It's personal choice really but I find if you have a problem then you can remove a power commander taking the bike to stock which makes fault finding easier plus resale value too and it won't affect any warranty if you have one.

The snatchyness is caused by the bike running too lean at low revs its a known problem although I would first check throttle position sensor is set right as it should still be rideable

Oh and another thing to watch with an ECU reflash is that if you send it in for a service and they update the ECU then you lose your custom map

In that case choose what suits you best either ECU reflash or power commander

Both will work.

I have experience with power commanders but not ECU reflashing although I have heard some very good stuff especially on the R1's in that the reflash was better at getting more power out of those and you could adjust more parameters. I know your not after squeezing more power its just how it was on the R1's

The trick is finding a company who knows what they are doing with both

I have just put a power commander on the FJR due to jerkiness throttle at low revs and it has smoothed it all out and thats just using a base map. I will get it set up to my bike one day but at the moment its done what I wanted it to do.

Depending on what is causing it the ecu flash is a better option as you have full control over all ecu settings. The power commander doest the fueling only unless you buy the second module and then it can do timing. It can change the secondary flys or enable disable settings.

Not sure where you are but I use John Warrington in Malton yourkshire. You can give him a ring and discuss you problem

Power commander you can change with your own computer but if you don't know what you are doing it can kill your engine same if you self flash.

most ecu flashing requires specific kit to do it. If you are only using it once then getting someone to do it is most cost effective. If you are reprogramming several times then buy the kit

While you're right about the timing etc I don't think this is Beans problem it will be purely down to the lean running it low throttle/idle this is normally how they overcome the emissions tests! ............If only they could adopt VW's approach to this

Saying that if the pricing is similar you may as well get everything played with and have a well running bike

I have to agree about John Warrington I have heard nothing but good stuff about him and also Dynobike in Malton but as the name suggests he is a power commander specialist

PS welcome to the forum :)

I have a vulcan s which practically has the same engine as the versys; try playing with the idle adjuster and see if the twitchy throttle stops. Honestly thats the only thing i did and the twitch throttle pretty much stopped at lower RPMs.

If you want to mess with the fueling then a booster plug can definitely be a cheaper alternative than the PC or ecu flash

Cant fault John Warrington`s work at all he has a lot of experience with very diverse machines and has a refreshing honesty when people ask for things that are not possible.

I can honestly say I think he is amongst the best.

Cheers
