Hi Guys

Reaching out for a bit of help here.

Recently one of the magazines (most likely classic motorcycle mechanics) ran an article with advice on buying a compressor.

I cant for the life of me find it and I was wondering if one of you knew which issue it was in?

Cheers

Ian

Fraid not but an interesting read nonetheless.

The article i am thinking of was good at laying out the properties and differences ie cfm against pressure and what capacity for different types of tools.

My little Ingersoll Rand is struggling to keep up and I wanted to check what I thought I knew when looking at what is available.

I cant be specific but i think it was about a year ago, have you looked on the classic mechanics website for any clues.

Good call I am convinced it was that magazine and I think it was written by the guy who now does the tool of the month stuff.

I am looking to power spray guns and occasionally impact wrench and diegrinders but to keep noise down so need to be looking at 2nd hand as new quiet stuff is very pricey.

What are you trying to run, any compressor can run high psi the cfm is the issue, compressors have a tank as a store, the motor runs till the tank is full this acts as a buffer, if your drawing more air than the buffer and compressor can cope with you end up having the motor running constantly, the tank becomes redundant and you end up running direct from the compressor with the motor running constantly.

2 ways around it, add a secondary bigger tank, it will take longer to fill both but for slightly longer bursts you will have a bigger buffer.

Best option compressor that can cope with what your using.

Thanks Bender your Modness lol

Yes I have used compressors for a while but wanted to gen up a bit before looking to up grade and I am sure the quieter kit is going to be out of my price range if I go new.

The one Stu mentioned is fortunately out of stock lol.

Thanks for the help so far I will be rummaging about for a slightly larger unit and hopefully I can get something quieter.

Cheers

For a silent one your talking too much for my liking

I had a medium sized direct drive one but the problem with direct drive is they are ear piercing!

The belt drive one I have is a different tone whiles its not quiet its more bearable! I can stand next to it without feeling the need to move

Though not likely, do you have somewhere else you could put the compressor and then just run a pipe/hose to your working area. Thats my plan when sheds finished. leave it in garage and run hose to shed. I should look at a bit of noise dampening though as the bugger wakes me up in in the early hours when it fires up to refill :|

I am sure I am heading in the direction of belt drive.

I was in a mates garage last night when he fired his up to run his tyre removal jig and balancer unit and it was quieter than my little puffer !

I feel research coming on.

That would be lovely but not possible for me at the moment.

Also I am a lazy git and don't drain the water often enough now and the compressor is under the bench, god knows how long I would leave it if it was in another room lol.

Belt drive sounds much more bearable!

If I switch off the compressor that would mean I'd have to walk from shed to garage and back again whenever I wanted to use it. Unacceptable, I'd rather wake the neighbours

As for the switch buy a mechanical timer so it goes off at say 9pm and back on at say 10pm?

When you see units compared side by side like that isn't it astonishing how much difference the tone makes !

Thanks for that Stu very interesting.
