Good old comfy big vif. First time in medium group. Not too bad. Only going steady, looking forward to sandwich and a kitkat. Clutch is slipping up top. Ahh

Nice, straight back on the horse! Is that Cadwell?

Well good thinking. I doubt bike policy will budge much, Footman James never seem bothered. Car would go up £25... Hmm over 5 years I suppose maybe about a hundred or something.

Rough cost for parts so far I reckon is about £570 without any sanding and painting. But then replacement gear will eclipse that slightly... Plus 260 for more boots (I'm quite peeved about the new speed hole) and some new non shredded waddyproof trouse. Or maybe the boots can be repaired but goretex lining... And then Helmet... I mean it seems fine, few grazes on it but feels like the done thing is to distrust it following a bump. Bah. Hmmm. I'll see what she says to £1100 which is being nice really because I hate sanding and painting, and glueing. I reckon insurance job..

When listed out it almost feels like I'm taking the piss but I didn't appear out of nowhere on purpose

glad your ok ish :thumb:

It was! Ankle still swollen and bruised but obviously not that bad and the big vif was up for it. Lovely day for it as well, though it started off in thick fog around cadwell. In fact they delayed the start until it cleared but half the track stayed misty for the first few sessions, which helped me anyway as I was late.

Good selection of bikes being chucked down the track, side of track, and some pushed back from the track. Lots of red flags. Cb500.. ZX11.. Nice old R1.. Assorted gixxer k7s or whatever.. Ducati 848.. Ouch. And this thing (it didn't crash thankfully, so many forks to bend)...

https://i.imgur.com/5dpuR60l.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'>

But aye, good times. I feel like a weakling though, the weight of the vif sadly did not dissappear at speed, if anything it got heavier :D Got passed a lot, only once somewhat aggressively but he waved sorry which was a nice touch. Had fun with the older stuff and the cb500s though and a poor old blade (with number plate) which just sailed on through to the grass after park straight... Man, it looked like you had it saved as well.

Always amazed at how sticky sticky rubber is

(obviously on way back to scrutineering to get weighed)

I added some eyes.

That is excellent. It now looks like you have Toothless the Night Fury hiding behind your screen. 8-)

Funnily enough someone else has said that, I had no clue who Toothless was until I googled it. :)

How fast was the Nikken?? Did it sound well?

So today it stopped raining (or at least threatening to rain) for long enough to get back to the K100. Cause of horn failure diagnosed:

https://i.imgur.com/YbsZNy1.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'>

I'll get round to that. Clocks unbolted, forks unclamped, top yoke pulled off:

https://i.imgur.com/cHkB7r4.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'>

K100's top yokes have the handlebar clamps rubber mounted so that the front wheel can do what it feels like over white lines. BMW like this effect so much I see even the F800 has it. Ridiculous.

The cat was enthralled as always..

Step 2: Take the front off.

https://i.imgur.com/Ifrw0sP.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'>

An extra part of taking the front off was to replace the brake pads. I remember someone somewhere asked when they should replace pads, and one response was "when they're flat". I think that's some good advice 8-)

https://i.imgur.com/zmAzeS6.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'>

They were alright (had some left) ~2500 miles ago, I don't know what happened!

With the front off and the top yoke out of the way I removed the knurled adjuster expecting a taper roller to be part of it.. Err..

https://i.imgur.com/QFQr4IP.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'>

https://i.imgur.com/9i9xrUW.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'>

I guess K100s are built slightly differently to K75s after all.

I couldn't figure out how to get the lower yoke out as it wouldn't budge with me pulling at it but the good old Clymer manual said just mallet it out. It worked.

https://i.imgur.com/a7L1pno.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'>

This left the joyous races to try and bash out. Also notice how it is further into the headstock than simply flush, so I'll have to find a way to bash the new ones in further. Great.

It wasn't bad actually, not quite as tight/hidden as most Japanese machines.

For new bearings I've chosen to Koyo JRRS tapers which come with a neat rubber seal on them. Sadly this seal did not fit inside the lightly mangled protective cups so I left those out, this may be a bad thing in retrospect because the holes that I used to bash the old bearings out will probably let water reach my new bearings.. But for non-holes Japanese stuff I think they might be the future! I just didn't understand how BMW had designed this particular machine.

Put the bits that need to be small in the freezer, but the bits that need to be warm in the sun. Anything that doesn't play ball gets the feel the wrath of Mr Hammer.

https://i.imgur.com/wIEImTj.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'>

https://i.imgur.com/zeZlCr1.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'>

The taper bearing that goes on the stem didn't want to play so I had to bash it down with the help of an old/discarded TRX850 fork spring spacer. This is why you never throw anything away! Also I use an old sprocket to hammer the races into the headstock, works okay. To bash the lower race inwards I took one of the old races to the bench grinder and took a bit off so it wouldn't get stuck in the headstock and then bashed that while on top of the new races. Perfick.

Crammed as much grease as I could into the new rollers..

https://i.imgur.com/kD2Re5R.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'>

Slap 'em on to the front like so..

https://i.imgur.com/ZZzXb2Z.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'>

Lovely solidly mounted handlebars, aaahhhhhh!

https://i.imgur.com/1eqUpUb.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'>

The Nikken was quiet, and didn't get to see how fast it was because it was in another group, but I'm sure it would've been a laugh.

I'm sure I got a one of them bearings when I did the Dr's notchy bearings moons ago. It was for the top. It didn't give a good fitting seal I seem to remember, or it mightve, but something was off. I don't think I could get the seal off and in the end I put the old bearing back on so the original seal / washer type thing could be used. The notch must've been in the bottom because it wer fine after that.

It's not a complete seal I don't think, just a lot better than being "open" like all the others. And the seal doesn't come off, it's part of the casing..

Today I did nothing because it was raining or threatening to rain most of the day

Had a stressful day so took the bike out for a quick ride when I finished work at 8pm...

After two previous issues with stuck bolts, I decided to check if everything would come undone, so I can change the brake pads, after an MOT advisory. Sadly, not, two tiny bolts that hold a cover over the front pads will not budge.

The Versys has been a great bike, but that is three times now something I could do at home means a trip to the garage.

Have you tried a bit of penetrating fluid? always being careful around the pads of course

Yes, pads packed with kitchen towel and the bolts are tiny, so hardly any used, and they are not budging. :(

Try some swearing or tool throwing that may work

Careful with the tool throwing !

I had a fun experience as a sqwab!

My friend Nick was a very good sprayer and while mum and dad were away it was agreed he would repair and spray damage to mums car.

Once done the garage door was opened so we could leave and a leaf was blown in and straight into the middle of the newly lacquered area.

Nick goes "Fook" and throws spanner on floor! This is where it gets funny and I got a black eye !

Ring end of spanner (quite large probably 14mm or larger) hits garage floor and pings off open end first straight through the door panel of the car.

All profit gone doing repair not previously needed.

I learnt an important life lesson !

Don't laugh when friends fook up if they are working for reduced rates as they were friends !

Cheers

Ian

Prepped it for a ride down to Portsmouth to finally collect my MIVV endcan tomorrow when of course it is supposed to rain all day. Then of course I'll get to fit it.

At least I don't have to go to Barnard Castle for it which is where it's been for the last 2 months.

No we made up but as I said I was but a sqwab probably 18 or so and we haven`t seen each other for years.

Nick was a fireman at "H21" Wimbledon and back in those days a lot of firemen had jobs on the black as we used to call it.

Funnily enough I used to drop him at work quite often as he tried to keep his ban out of his jobs radar and as far as I can remember he got away with it!

For obvious reasons I wont be revealing his surname lol.

Cheers

Ian
