It’s amazing how much better a bike can look with a bit of care and attention :thumb: :thumb:

I'd like to do a lot more but trying to keep spend low and also itching to ride it. Over the winter I might well take it apart again and tidy up a few more bits. Would like to get the engine out and cleaned up but who knows if I will.

Well what you have done so far makes it loads better, nice work in a short period too. :thumb: :thumb:

Havent seen him, will check it out 👍. Pics flatter my work somewhat! I'm trying to find a balance between tidying up but not removing all the age if that makes sense. It's a twenty year old bike and I'm happy for it to look like that to an extent and for it to be mechanically sorted (well as sorted as my limited mechanics allow).

loving the progress and quality of work. That brushed look o the forks is superb. have had a go on my gs125 forks with a strip of green scotchbrite working a line at a time, must spend more time next time and maybe get somewhere near your results.

Cheers Rob, I think you are fair way ahead of me on quality of work!

I use this for the brushed look

It's really for knife making. I have three different grades of scotchbrite belts and work on the slack of the belt not the platen. It's difficult with fiddly bits but you can get in quite well working carefully on the edge of the belt, works really well on the main barrel of the fork though. Difficult by hand, have done a few knives like that using wet and dry lubricated with soapy water.

That is a lovely piece of kit, use the scotchbrite wet with soapy water, have heard you can use WD40 or similar but the mess is not as easy to clean up. Oh abd great work on the exhaust, did my bandit with drill and mop, black then white compound too a full day and an hour of riding for the headers to go back to gold colour.

Cheers

Started work on steering head bearings. Old ones out, lower was pretty manky. They are the ball type and due a change I think. Getting the top bearing cup out was an effort. New cups put in. The top one sits slightly proud and I'm not sure if that's normal so advice appreciated. It's definitely seated against the lip.

Rear subframe blasted by a local place and painted.

Being an idiot I thought I was well out the way when spraying but the paint has blown around a bit and settled out as a fine mist on things so plenty of cleaning to do and the Tdm is going to need a good wash and clay barring. Can't see any overspray bit I can feel it. Lesson learned.

Few more bits done. Forks finished and ready to go back on. Head bearings fitted. Front frame that holds clocks taken off and sprayed. Rubber grommets taken off and sat in some gummifledge ready to go back on when the paint has dried. IMG_20200904_174206.thumb.jpg.c636e2827caa5fdec75b1204351ae4db.jpg

Never used that rubber stuff. to clean and dress my rubber (Sid James laugh) I use CarPro PERL and Red rubber grease for everything else. Does it do a better job than brake fluid on carb rubbers????

I use it on car door seals so used it as I had it. Supposed to condition the rubber so hoping it will keep them nice and flexible. Honestly don't know if it's any use on carb rubbers and the like. Carpro stuff tends to be very good so can understand you using that.

Forgot pics 🙄 but basically front end mostly back on. Head bearings set but think it might need loosening slightly. Manual says 45nm for the castle nut. I set to 30 and seemed too stuff so backed off a quarter turn at a time, twice and have left at that for now.

Rear subframe back on, and acf50 coated whilst it is easy to access all of it, undertray cleaned and back on, will order some new bolts to replace the old crusty ones though. Need to check cable routing. Reg/ rectifier, torque arm and rear caliper back on. Caliper needs fluid and bleeding.

Front calipers taken off, crusty so will clean and maybe give new seals etc. Pads have a bit of life left I think.

I think battery is toast. It's been on an Oximiser and showed as charged but wouldn't turn the engine over, just the click of the starter relay. Jumped the bike from an external jump start. Was slow to turn over at first but fired into life ok. Will take pics laters.

And so it continues. Front calipers taken apart, not too bad but new seals ordered. Pistons polished and generally cleaned. Front wheel torqued up.

Undertray bolts swapped with some shiny new stainless ones. Number plate bracket on. Right hand pillion footpeg/ exhaust hanger brushed. Was scratched and slightly corroded so decided I had to do something with it. Difficult shape to work on. Am I happy with it, not really but it looks generally better, got to a point of cleaning, sanding, brushing for an hour and a half and decided enough was enough. Still need to do the other side.

Exhaust on.

Realised the replacement pillion footpeg was the wrong side 🙄 so will have to order another.

Number plate light back on.

Lid of brake fluid reservoir burnished. Seat lock mechanism cleaned up and bolted into place.

  • 2 weeks later...

Knee is feeling ok yesterday and reet good today so cracked on. Coolant changed, new spark plugs, oil filter. Waiting on a new sump plug as old one was crusty and rounded. Soon as that's in fresh oil will go in. Other than that, cleaning, polishing and assembling mainly.

Seems there is an electrical gremlin. Intermittent issue with the indicators on the right hand side front and rear. Working fine earlier but now not, lightest touch on the wires where they plug in and they work. Annoying. Also the paint on the left side is darker than the right. Guessing it's had some time parked with sun on one side that's slightly bleached the colour. Not too worried about that though. Indicators an issue

I’m sure you will sort it, good clean of the faulty terminal maybe. :thumb:

Good spray of contact cleaner and they seem to be behaving themselves :thumb:

Also sorted the rear brake light adjustment. I was having to really press the pedal to the bottom of travel before the light would come on which looked a bit bloody dangerous to me, wee adjustment and it comes on under normal braking now.
