Rock Oil chain lube

I usually use Wurths dry wax which applied little and often works well for me. However I ran out of it and J&S didn't have any on the shelf so I bought a can of Rock Oil chain lube instead.


It is weird stuff, everything ends up sticky because it has the consistency of glue. When I wiped the chain down afterwards the rag and my hands were like they'd been coated in glue.


I noticed a drip on the floor which was blue - and it reminded me of Fuchs air filter oil, which is also blue and very sticky.


It has left the chain very sticky which I'm not happy with as it's only going to attact grit so I think I'll wash it off and start from scratch. Thsi is the reason I gave up using gear oil on chains.


Just wondered if anyone uses this stuff and how they find it?

XTreme, that's the correct stuff IMHO iirc. If it doesn't say racing on it, or isn't endorsed by the best of the best, the 1% of the upper echelon, MotoGP™ then it isnt even fit for toddler's tricycle. In a pinch if it says something along the lines of "off-road/gripped/sorted" that'll do to get you home.

I've used all sorts of stuff - to me it all seems much of a muchness in terms of protection.

I now use 80/90 gear oil cos it's the least mess overall.

Especially when I learned that most people use way too much chain lube - an O/X ring only needs a wipe along the side plates .....I use an old toothbrush to put it on and wipe off the excess with oily rag.

Well it seems no one else has had the misfortune to buy this Rock Oil stuff. It's rubbish. Very thick and sticky so you can't wipe it over the chain with a rag. Yet it still flings off despite saying it dries once applied.


Applied sparingly but enough to cover the whole chain, left for a few days, and it's everywhere.

I do the same. Mainly because the spary cans are a rip off. You get a couple of applications from a spray can and they're empty. A bottle of gear oil is the same price and lasts years. As you say the lube that's doing the work is sealed inside the chain by the o rings so when you're applying lube you don't need to apply much, just enough to wet the outside to keep the weather off the chain and stop it rusting. The only downside of the gear oil is that you have to apply it more often compared to the sticky spray lube
