Well that’s a downer. They no longer sell Erdinger, have to make do with Franziskaner. Was quite epic the ride up Giau, 29 hairpins..., less coming down. Last time I went up there was with Snoddy. It was bitter cold with snow on either side of the road almost all the way. Still good fun though. We only had one day here. I’m probably going to stay until Monday at least. And generally bimble. Food has arrived!

Not a bad view from the tent, bikes just separate on some hard standing. Until I’m told to move it. Been offered espresso by an elderly Russian lady who only speaks Italian!! All very civilised. Later off to ride passo Duran then wind my way round to Sella. (Maybe) though it’s a horrible tourist trap so a pass I might pass.

The campsite is next to a river and so there’s a big embankment and wall on that side, it’s year round so flooding is a risk they have had to deal with. The view from that side standing on the wall though.., my Russian adopted mother has offered me lunch and it would be rude not to. Anyway the view

Turns out my adopted mother has been in Italy since Gorbachev and turned native. Never been back. But she still has a funny accent (apparently) she made a very simple salad and then calamari with red peppers and pasta in a garlic sauce. How these people create something wonderful from the simplest ingredients beats me. Anyway, let that go down and then a ride later.

Today I went to lago missurina (I think that’s how it’s spelt) didn’t stop, then the fuel light came on., it’s very conservative and comes on with 60 miles remaining! So, rather than pay for extortionate Italian petrol I popped into Austria, as you do. 40c cheaper!! Then I realised I wasn’t all that far from a certain campsite that once upon a time I limped into with a broken clutch and also not far from the Pustertaler high road, where I believe someone had an oopsie which resulted in a broken indicator lens. Fun times all round on that trip so anyway this was a road I just had to go up again. And I did. Not many photos this time as I’ve been on multiple missions. Apparently 28c tomorrow and thunderstorms. We’ll see. Chance anyway to wash a weeks worth of dirty laundry! The things we have to do eh? It’s a trial. ODO is now at 1544 miles from home.

The photos are rather less impressive than the reality at some points there was a massive slope to my side and no barrier!!! And the bottom of the valley was an awful long way down.

Yes. By me twice, the first Time was before the first ever Eifel trip, so... 10 years or more. That time I rode it west to east, this time the other way. I also saw signs for the grossglockner. But hey ho. Maybe next time. I’m far too tight to pay the toll just for a couple of hours. All day or won’t pay!!

And a funny thing, just after crossing into Austria at the first village a speed trap. A line/up of very unhappy looking sports bikers all at the side of the road with the polizei, I was ignored and carried on at the correct speed until the NSL sign. #smug

No beer or cake today!

I’m debating heading north on Sunday rain forecast for here and Monday too. Up there sunny all week. See if there’s a change to the forecast tomorrow. I was considering Slovenia but it’s the same there.

Another glorious morning. The threat of thunderstorms has now moved to this evening, after 8pm. Right now not a cloud in the sky 16c rising to 24 later. Oiled the chain last night when I got back and it was still warm. In the dark with the help of my LED lightbulb. Almost a full tank of Austrian petrol, so far I’ve only used Austrian and Luxembourg petrol! So cheap. A 300 miles range has some benefits, Even treated it to two full tanks of premium 98 at €1.12 to give it a good clean with the added detergents. The bike hasn’t missed a beat and the DCT, which is impossible to stall has made riding the extremely twisty roads round here a joy. I’ve been riding it mostly in fully manual mode. Which is great fun!! Took a walk into the field behind the campsite for another view. On the edge of a very expensive town to stay in (hotel) at €8 a night this place is unbeatable.

It’s been great so far, but, perhaps that’s all about to change with rain forecast for tomorrow. And if it does I might pack up and leave, head north into Bavaria.but, we’ll have to see, the forecast was very wrong about today. Thunderstorms it said whereas the reality. Photos from today’s ride. I’m worn out, just about coping with the help of a Franziskaner!!

Clear night, woke at 4 to use the loo and it’s starting to cloud over, forecast hasn’t changed and the rain is due to start at about 10. And last till Tuesday. So, it’s farewell to the Dolomites and I’m chasing the sun northeast to eastern Bavaria. Rain is over Munich too, but sunny and warm towards Regensburg. So, if I can manage it. Up at 7 get everything packed away and out of the mountains onto faster roads before it starts. Or at least well on my way.

I’ll be sorry to leave, but coming here was on a whim and an added treat, weather has been glorious and as I’ve only ridden for half days, a bit of a rest too. Now off to Bavaria!! Using the Felbertaurn tunnel €10 but it cuts a massive dogleg off the trip north. Once across Austria if the weathers good I’ll use ordinary roads but if it’s a matter of escaping the rain, Autobahn.

270 miles later... and I’m in the Bavarian Forest Mountain range, not a huge distance from the Czech border, which I will just have to cross at some point as I’ve never been this Far East before, well I have but that was much further south. Never been over this side of Germany anyway. First impressions are good, the roads are as good as you would expect and snake their way through the landscape, perfect uncomplicated riding, with only a few hairpins, just to keep me on my toes. It reminds me a little of the Black Forest. Similar but very different. A lot less touristy, If you want to pin me on the map I’m at a campsite in a little village called Bernried. North and a little west of Deggendorf. It’s lovely and warm here even at this time. Much lower than Cortina, Dry but overcast... there was a fair bit of rain to get through and it doesn’t look like it’s rained here for days at least. Dry tomorrow and I’ll have an explore... and if it’s worth it stay till Wednesday morning. No photos as the mountains coming north were completely shrouded. ODO is 1859 miles from my front door. One thing made me chuckle, I passed a village called Pfaffing!!

Well now there’s a thing. Took what looked like a fairly innocent minor road and as if by magic the alphabet has gone all mad on accents. I’m in the Czech Republic and I’m not insured!! Risk taker me. Well, I am insured but I didn’t include CZ in my RAC rescue wotsit. I’ve passed a sign that warned about Bears!! What do when you see something like that? You don’t turn round to take a bloody photo (just in case one is ready to pounce) so, I’m just on the outskirts of a place called Obec Lenora and heading for a place called Volary. (Which reminds me of my mother singing while doing the washing up - strangely enough)

Anyroad, Lions and Tigers and Bears Oh My. Onwards and upwards. Volary (oh oh) and then lake Lipno, then turn south into a bit of Austria an back to the National Park. Lovely roads here and lots and lots (and lots) of trees.B6F6275B-5823-4445-BCDC-01ADF1C906F4.thumb.jpeg.71205316d4685cf7a2739a5046139783.jpeg

Just passed a church and I couldn’t resist a look, the church was closed, but the graveyard was fascinating and made me realise where I was, This was the Sudetenland which I learnt about at school and the graveyard, all the names were German and a great many of them died during or shortly after the war. Very ‘Alien’ to my eyes a lot of the graves had obviously been attacked at some point, the stones say nothing or have had metal plates torn off. Some seem to have been fixed with the original steel tops replaced. But the vast majority are completely anonymous.

Like, like, like, like...

Harz mountains next?

I’m having another day here as it’s so nice, was mostly cloudy here today with just a bit of sunshine. Clear skies now and set to be warm 23c and blue skies tomorrow. Did the south end today, north end tomorrow and then start making my way west from wednesda. Not back at work until next Wednesday night. So... have to think about it tomorrow night. I’m just a tad squiffy on weissbeer right now. The campsite stube was open and I just had to.

Had to

It’s 300 miles to the Harz from here. Bit of a slog when time is starting to run out, I’ll have a think about it, when I’m rather more capable of a rational decision. (Hic)

A very typical Road of the type I like. Sky looks grim but it’s been a lovely day 23c and no wind.

Gutwrenching beautiful. The tarmac, I mean. The scenery's ok too.

It’s a proper mountain range, all low mountains a little like those around the Nurburgring, but more tightly packed as it were. Something like the Malverns only a lot more of them and all tree covered. I would say the roads here are even better than the Eifel, consistently smooth as silk, perfect. when I say they snake through the landscape that’s exactly what I mean. I’m having one more day here, because it’s so nice, setting off tomorrow, still undecided about which way aside from west. I’ll try and take more photo’s. blue skies and set to be sunny and warm today. Morning coffee made and sitting in the sun before I have a shower and head out.

I took a walk to the local markt yesterday morning to buy breakfast and they were selling Asbach for €10.99 70cl bottle, so time to stock up until next time. That brandy costs £38 in Nottingham!!! How could I say no?

Pulled over at Aber 1035m, below a hill thTs actually 100m taller than Ben Nevis and is covered with trees. I will add a photo below, it has two radio domed at its summit This is ski country. I’m less than a half mile from the Czech border, but staying on this side today (mostly) just a few photos so far. From my walk to the Markt this morning and a few from the ride, when I could be bothered to stop.
